Linux ecosystem pegged at $25B
A report set to be released by the Linux Foundation on Wednesday has estimated that the Linux ecosystem is now worth $25 billion. Not much information is available at this point, though it is known that the Linux Foundation values Google's use of Linux for its new Android Smartphone operating system at $1.3 billion worth of R&D. Sean Michael Kerner over at Internetnews.com thinks the figure is "a bit low" compared to other forecasts he has heard of through the years. However, an IDC forecast in 2007 did peg the value of the Linux ecosystem, at that time, at $21 billion. One thing is for sure, in the context of the $242 billion spent annually on all software, Linux does have a lot of room to grow.
