Microsoft founds council to foster interoperability

Microsoft really seems intent on playing nice these days, huh? Hot on the heels of their landmark agreement with Novell for Linux interoperability , the company will announce the "Interop Vendor Alliance," a council of technology vendors that will address issues of interoperability. The committee, which will have about 25 members initially, aims to identify and address …

SPEC subgroup to test virtualization speeds

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fastest of them all? Actually, you know what, mirror? You're not quite as accurate or as objective as you used to be. I mean sure, if I'm asking about Snow White or something you're still the resource. But when it comes to virtualization , I'm not quite sure that you're as on top of the game. So don't take this too hard, but I think I've found someone else who I …

Chutes & Ladders: Microsoft exec does Mozilla security

How could Mozilla employ Windows for security? Relax, that's not happening, but Mozilla did hire Window Snyder, a former Microsoft security expert. Snyder will have overall responsibility for the security of Mozilla software and she'll represent the organization in public. She'll certainly get some teasing about the name, but officials from Microsoft and from independent security firms say she's quite respected throughout the industry. So software like the Firefox browser will, …

XenSource launches biz app

Xen may or may not be worthy of enterprise-scale virtualization deployments, depending on which vendor you ask. However, XenSource says that the University of Cambridge's software is in fact, good enough and the company plans to ship XenEnterprise next week, which is meant to directly compete against EMC's VMware software. CEO Peter Levine says he believes that there is plenty of demand for server virtualization, even though industry analysts say that very few companies actually use it so …

Red Hat to use Xen in enterprise suite

Red Hat will include XenSource's open-source virtualization software in the next major version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, officials said. The announcement follows a controversy earlier this week in which a Red Hat employee said Xen isn't ready for enterprise use. Whether the employee was misquoted or misunderstood isn't entirely clear, but there is a qualifier to current announcement--the next major version they're citing is not due until late 2007 which gives XenSource plenty of time …

Microsoft, XenSource cooperate for Longhorn

Microsoft and Linux advocate XenSource are partnering for interoperability in the software virtualization market. Both companies face EMC's VMware subsidiary as a rival. The deal lets customers run Xen Linux systems inside future Longhorn versions of Windows Server, with Microsoft offering technical support for the non-Windows product. Unfortunately, none of this will be real until 2008. For more on virtualization: - check out this CRN …

Server virtualization format fight intensifies

XenSource, an open-source virtualization contender, will include Microsoft's Virtual Hard Disk format in its XenEnterprise 3.0 server. No, that's not an April Fool's Day joke (see our "And Finally..." section for that). From Microsoft's perspective, it's better that companies run Windows virtually alongside *nix-based operating systems than not at all. Meanwhile, Xen's rival VMWare is making its own format available cost-free. For more on virtualization: - read this CRN …
