Intel, Novell to virtualize Windows for Linux

Here's a bizarre love triangle for you: despite the fact that Microsoft and Novell already announced a partnership to allow Windows Server to run on SUSE Linux and vice versa , Novell and Intel have announced paravirtualized network and block device drivers that would accomplish the same task in Xen virtual environments. That's gotta sting. While these new drivers will only support …

Red Hat released Enterprise Linux 5 Beta 1 this weekend. The test version of the open-source operating system is two months late because of memory problems in the kernel debugging process. However, XenSource says that the University of Cambridge's software is in fact, good enough and the company plans to ship XenEnterprise next week, which is meant to directly compete against EMC's VMware software. CEO Peter Levine says he believes that there is plenty of demand for server virtualization, even though industry analysts say that very few companies actually use it so …

Red Hat to use Xen in enterprise suite

Red Hat will include XenSource's open-source virtualization software in the next major version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, officials said. The announcement follows a controversy earlier this week in which a Red Hat employee said Xen isn't ready for enterprise use. Whether the employee was misquoted or misunderstood isn't entirely clear, but there is a qualifier to current announcement--the next major version they're citing is not due until late 2007 which gives XenSource plenty of time …

Microsoft, XenSource cooperate for Longhorn

Microsoft and Linux advocate XenSource are partnering for interoperability in the software virtualization market. Both companies face EMC's VMware subsidiary as a rival. The deal lets customers run Xen Linux systems inside future Longhorn versions of Windows Server, with Microsoft offering technical support for the non-Windows product. Unfortunately, none of this will be real until 2008. For more on virtualization: - check out this CRN …

An open-source version of Java is probably almost a year away, not just a few months away as was widely reported yesterday, Sun Microsystems officials said. The executive who made the "months" comment was referring to double-digit months, he explained in a blog entry. Sun needs to resolve controversial issues such as who'll maintain the open code and which license(s) it will use. For more on Java: - check out this internetnews.com …
