IBM to launch Tivoli Process Manager
Thanks to some recent acquisitions, IBM is about ready to rollout Tivoli Process Manager, a set of unified management tools that utilize electronic sensors to keep track of IT physical assets, including--but not limited to--IT gear. "Non-IT assets are getting embedded chips, embedded software stacks and IP (Internet protocol) addresses," said Al Zollar, general manager of IBM's Tivoli division. IBM to ship new Tivoli provisioning software
Later this month, IBM will ship Tivoli Provisioning Manager 5.1. New features in this version focus on automation techniques and deployment tools. There is also a new feature for controlling network bandwidth, rather than forcing administrators to monitor their resources manually. Also new is a grid-like peering feature and imaging technology, the latter acquired from Rembo Technology. Pricing for the new version wasn't announced.

IBM to shell out $740 million for MRO Software
IBM is entering the IT asset management market with a $740 million acquisition of MRO Software. MRO is better known for its industrial equipment management software, but even that's becoming more IT-dependent these days, and meanwhile the IT asset software is a good fit for IBM's Tivoli series. IBM and MRO have been partners for a decade and IBM plans to retain MRO's employees, so the transition for customers should be smooth.

BMC buys Identify Software for $150M
What's your IT problem? BMC hopes its $150 million of acquisition Identity Software can help you solve it. Identity called its tools the AppSight Problem Resolution System, but for BMC they will likely get the Remedy moniker. The software works best in Java 2 Enterprise Edition and Microsoft .Net environments, officials said. It will probably get re-released this summer or fall as a rival to applications from CA, Compuware, IBM/Tivoli and Mercury Interactive.

IBM service architecture to govern all?
IBM's latest stab at profiting from modular software technology is called Service Oriented Architecture Governance, delivered as a bundle of the WebSphere application server with various services and process parameters. Development and management applications from Big Blue's Rational and Tivoli lines are also included among the bundled goods. Lawson's ERP upgrade adds service architecture tools
Lawson Software launched an upgrade to its enterprise resource planning suite with service architecture (SOA) tools from IBM. Lawson Release 9 comes bundled with IBM's WebSphere Application Server ND 6.0, Tivoli Directory Server 6.0 and DB2 Enterprise Edition 8.2, officials said. Release 9 also has new features for regulatory compliance and business process management.

HP merges Peregrine software into OpenView
Hewlett-Packard's OpenView Service Desk now includes an integrated version of Peregrine Systems software, officials said. HP acquired Peregrine in September last year for $425 million to get its IT asset tracking tools and to catch up with rivals CA and IBM/Tivoli. HP's approach also includes IT change management--that is, keeping track of not just IT inventory but also how it's all configured.
