SPOTLIGHT: EMC Q2 profit falls on inventory troubles
EMC made a profit of $279.1 million for its second quarter on revenues of $2.57 billion. The profit was down from last year's $293.4 million, but the revenues were up from $2.34 billion, though still short of the $2.66 billion target. Problems in the quarter included an inventory shortage of the high-end Symmetrix DMX storage arrays, officials said. Article
EMC plans native encryption in storage
EMC confirmed its plans to build a natively encrypted storage engine by using some of the technology it's acquiring from RSA Security. That's not surprising--however, it will take about 12-18 months (many adjectives have been applied to EMC but "nimble" was never one of them). Encryption will be powered by the array's own processors, but whether the arrays are of the Symmetrix or Clariion variety remains to be seen. Cost will be an issue, too.

DEALS: Debugging, API-swapping
BMC buys Identify Software.
IBM, EMC move API goodwill to iSeries
In fall 2003, EMC and IBM became the last two major storage vendors to share APIs with each other. But the deal began as a trickle. Now it's a steady flow as there is a new five-year deal to share APIs between EMC's Symmetrix array and IBM's iSeries server. The move helps EMC expand its non-storage management software into IBM shops, while IBM presumably gets some money (terms weren't disclosed). Best of all, the API swap expansion is good news for customers.

EMC announces high-end array, IP storage
EMC, as expected, announced its petabyte-class Symmetrix DMX-3 storage array. EMC's positioning this as highly customizable so it can run high-speed Fibre Channel drives for priority transactional data or low-speed ATA drives for a mid-tier ahead of tape backup systems. Also new are a 96-drive DMX edition and IP features for EMC's Rainfinity storage virtualization kits.

EMC to unveil ultra-high-end array
EMC tomorrow will debut Symmetrix DMX-3, which was announced last summer. This version should ship by this summer with up to 1,920 high-speed drives at 300GB, or it can be configured for slower, larger drives. Data management software, updates to the lower-end Symmetrix models and the status of EMC's virtualization appliances are also expected to be on the agenda.

How EMC is using its Smarts software
EMC acquired System Management Arts late last year and is now releasing version 2.0 of their Application Connectivity Monitor software. The software tries to automatically find systems problems without human intervention. The current update has separate interfaces for standard and custom applications. Another big update next year will be tailored for EMC's Symmetrix and Clariion storage gear.

EMC's new petabyte storage
EMC's new Symmetrix DMX-3 is the biggest storage box ever seen. Currently it holds up to 288 terabytes of data; by the end of next year it will scale to a full petabyte (1,024 terabytes), officials said. DMX-3 starts at $250,000 plus software, plus services. EMC says a brute-force product, in the case of transaction data, is much faster than linking together multiple smaller machines.

EMC profit jumps, revenue outlook flat
Storage and data management giant EMC reported a second-quarter profit of $293 million (12 cents per share), up significantly from $193 million last year. Revenue was $2.34 billion, also up drastically from $1.97 billion last year. However, growth in the near future will be flat, officials said, and that caused the stock price to dip. In products, EMC next week is expected to announce Symmetrix 7. Software sales were up, particularly in the VMware subsidiary.

EMC to upgrade Symmetrix, Clariion
EMC is preparing to announce upgrades to its high-end Symmetrix and mid-range Clariion storage systems. Symmetrix, last updated 18 months ago, gets 4Gb connections and a mirrored cache; its current cache is vulnerable to memory crashes, pundits say. It also gets larger raw capacity and software tweaks, and the news is expected on July 25. However, there's no word yet on whether Symmetrix will gain any modularity or on the direction of changes to Clariion.
