Largest DDoS attack in 2010 crossed 100Gbps barrier

The ferocity of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks has been increasing over the years, with one attack finally breaking 100Gbps in 2010. This finding comes from Arbor Networks in its most

Eclipse preps open-source storage app

IBM's open-source storage management software, Aperi, has not made much headway thus far but that may change now that it's been approved by the Eclipse Foundation. Aperi was originally seen as an anti-EMC move, so transforming it into a mainstream Eclipse project lends some credibility. Other companies involved include Brocade Communications Systems/McData, CA, Cisco Systems, Emulex, Fujitsu, LSI Logic, Network Appliance, and Novell. Yet some big names are still missing such as EMC, …

Emulex acquires Sierra Logic for $180M

Emulex, known for its storage host-bus adapters, is acquiring Sierra Logic, known for its embedded switch technology, for $180 million. Sierra's technology for improving the reliability of serial ATA drives is vital to the deal--companies like SATA technology because it's cheaper than Fibre Channel, however, it's also considered less reliable. So whoever owns that technology could hold the key to a huge new market. Emulex already sells storage components to giants like Sun Microsystems, …

IBM boosts its networked storage speeds

IBM announced new models of its high-end System Storage line, dubbed the DS8100 Turbo and DS8300 Turbo, both of which are 15 percent faster at processing transactions than the previous DS8000 model. The storage arrays use Power5+ processors, 4-gbps Fibre Channel connections and a tiered drive scheme but they won't ship until the fall. IBM also announced new wide-area data synchronization software, new models of network-attached storage via their partnership with Network Appliance and new …

Sun in open-source storage management standards war

Aperi, an IBM-led open-source project for storage networking management which began last fall, recently lost its support from Sun Microsystems. Sun returned to backing the Storage Networking Industry Association's approach, known as SMI-S. There's a strong argument for the open-source approach, which is also backed by Brocade, CA, Cisco Systems, McData and Network Appliance. But those companies also support SMI-S, which has existed for years without much traction. Will anyone ever succeed …

EMC to double India investment, staff

EMC will spend $500 million on research and development in India during the next four years, not $250 million as it promised last year, CEO Joe Tucci said. Moreover, the work will focus on high-end products because of India's talent pool, not just low-priority projects where cheaper costs are the main concern, Tucci explained. However, EMC may just be keeping up with its rivals: Network Appliance committed $150 million and IBM promised $6 billion (overall; not just for …

NetApp tries for high-speed storage

The latest version of Network Appliance's storage operating system, OnTap GX, is tweaked for use with high-speed Linux clusters and with the FAS3050 and 6070 storage devices. Its new features include a parallel computing utility and global namespaces, evolved from the Fall 2003 acquisition of Spinnaker Networks. The new software is available now and is meant to compete against BlueArc's Titan 2000 NAS system. For more on storage: - read this internetnews.com …

Brocade buys file management for $60M

Brocade Communications Systems is acquiring NuView for $60 million. NuView has been through three incarnations, each sold. The current NuView makes file management tools for network-attached storage. They're already partners with EMC, Microsoft and Network Appliance, so it should not take long for NuView's StorageX suite to become integrated with Brocade's Tapestry platform. However, Hewlett-Packard and Veritas (pre-Symantec) already made similar deals, so Brocade is playing catch-up in …

EMC's intelligent NAS management

EMC has new monitoring software for network-attached storage, based on its December 2004 acquisition of System Management Arts for $260 million. The software is called Smart IP Availability Manager for NAS and promises ultra-high reliability. Industry experts say it's an impressive step forward; how will enterprise NAS rivals like Network Appliance, BlueArc, Hitachi and IBM respond? For more on the products: - see this internetnews.com …
