Bitfone, a developer of mobile device management software, has announced that it has been acquired by HP's handheld group. Bitfone's software allows IT staff to track mobile devices in real-time--be they Treos, BlackBerrys or BlackJacks--and even allows for over-the-air firmware updates, eliminating the need to corral your sales team. IBM to ship new Tivoli provisioning software

Later this month, IBM will ship Tivoli Provisioning Manager 5.1. New features in this version focus on automation techniques and deployment tools. There is also a new feature for controlling network bandwidth, rather than forcing administrators to monitor their resources manually. Also new is a grid-like peering feature and imaging technology, the latter acquired from Rembo Technology. Pricing for the new version wasn't announced. IBM to shell out $740 million for MRO Software

IBM is entering the IT asset management market with a $740 million acquisition of MRO Software. MRO is better known for its industrial equipment management software, but even that's becoming more IT-dependent these days, and meanwhile the IT asset software is a good fit for IBM's Tivoli series. Hewlett-Packard, with the announcement of its $4.5 billion acquisition of Mercury Interactive, is creating a huge boost for the relatively quiet HP OpenView software suite.
