Microsoft, IBM, others team on SML

A new draft of the service modeling language is being endorsed by an impressive list of major IT vendors, including BEA Systems, BMC Software, Cisco Systems, Dell, EMC, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems. BMC updates apps for data-center optimization

BMC Software announced new versions of software from the acquisitions of Remedy and Marimba (in 2002 and 2004, respectively.) The programs are now integrated, officials said. Affected products include Virtualizer 2.5, Performance Assurance 7.3, Change and Configuration Management, Atrium Configuration Management Database, Discovery and Performance Manager 2.1. BMC has more plans for the mainframe

BMC Software last week introduced a range of new mainframe software. These include a backup and recovery program for database administrators, a tool which shares mainframe monitoring updates with BMC's existing Service Impact Manager and two data encryption features shipping next month, officials said. IBM open-sources automated software tools

IBM said it's open-sourcing some development tools that help troubleshoot applications built with the Web Services Distributed Management standard. The code resides inside the Apache Muse Project, officials said. Other companies supporting WSDM include industry powerhouses like BMC Software, CA, Cisco Systems, Fujitsu, Hitachi, Oracle/Siebel and Tibco, so users shouldn't worry about any IBM intentions to take control of the standard with its donation. Companies spent almost $1.4 billion on service-level management software in 2005, with 58 percent of the money spent at BMC Software, CA, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Mercury Interactive, according to analyst firm Enterprise Management Associates. BMC announces transaction tools
