Microsoft founds council to foster interoperability

Microsoft really seems intent on playing nice these days, huh? Hot on the heels of their landmark agreement with Novell for Linux interoperability , the company will announce the "Interop Vendor Alliance," a council of technology vendors that will address issues of interoperability. The committee, which will have about 25 members initially, aims to identify and address …

BEA CTO: Open-source is out of touch

There's a gap between what customers want from open-source software and what open-source software programmers actually produce, said Rob Levy, CTO and executive VP of BEA systems. That leaves companies like BEA--or worse, users themselves--to customize open-source software more than they would prefer. That's causing BEA and its peers to offer hybrids of open and proprietary software, Levy said. But it won't be a major obstacle for service applications to overcome, he added. For …

BEA advances high-speed app platform

BEA Systems today launched WebLogic Real Time Core Edition 1.1. Moving from x.0 to x.1 isn't typically a big deal, but in this case, the new Java-based software has response times of 30 milliseconds versus the older time of 100 milliseconds--a very significant difference when online transactions are involved. The upgrade also includes the WebLogic Express 9.2 application server and the JRockit Runtime Analyzer tool, all designed to compete against Tibco Software's Rendezvous …

BEA acquires Flashline for service capabilities

BEA Systems is acquiring Flashline, which makes metadata repository software, for an undisclosed amount. BEA says that the software is needed to help companies manage a growing number of code snippets for use with service architectures. Flashline's software will be renamed AquaLogic Enterprise Repository and, presumably, it will be integrated with the rest of the AquaLogic's look and feel (no timeline was given). The software complements but does not replace BEA's existing AquaLogic …

Microsoft, IBM, others team on SML

A new draft of the service modeling language is being endorsed by an impressive list of major IT vendors, including BEA Systems, BMC Software, Cisco Systems, Dell, EMC, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems. The language uses an XML approach to consistently describe hardware, software and services. The work began at Microsoft a few years ago and nobody's crying foul yet, so it has a decent chance at commercial success. For more on SML: - read this IDG …

Cisco, Red Hat, others support new messaging protocol

Cisco, Red Hat and others said they're supporting a new open protocol for systems messaging. They call it the Advanced Message Queuing Protocol and said it will interoperate with existing protocols such as Java, SOAP and the WS-x series. IBM's WebSphere MQ dominates the current state of messaging protocols, along with others like BEA Systems' WebLogic Server JMS and open-source versions such as OpenJMS and MantaRay. So why does the world need another one? Unsurprisingly (from either …
