Windows 8 upgrade discounts ending this month

The special discounted upgrade to Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows 8 Pro is set to expire in about three weeks.

The deal that lets users who buy a new Windows 7 PC purchase an upgrade license for Windows 8 Pro at $14.99 is slated to end on Jan. 31. Microsoft pointed this out in a new blog entry on the Blogging Windows blog. Users who register to receive the Windows Upgrade Offer will get a promo code via email, which will be valid for another month, until Feb. 28.

As reported by Computerworld, a similar offer that lets users of earlier versions of Windows upgrade to Windows 8 Pro also ends in January. The discounted price in this instance would be $39.99 using a download upgrade, or $69.99 for a DVD. The report suggested that DVD-based Windows 8 Pro upgrades sold after the deadline will revert back to a list price of $199.99--substantially higher than the current prices.

Finally, early adopters may want to note that the Windows 8 Developer Preview, the Consumer Preview and the Release Preview, are all set to expire on Jan. 15. Beyond that, computers with these versions of Windows 8 installed will restart every hour or two with a prompt to upgrade to a paid license.
