Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) is working on getting Windows 8 to boot from a USB flash drive, according to a new feature found in a leaked copy of Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 operating system. Called Portable Workspace creator, the new tool essentially installs Windows 8 onto a USB storage device with at least 16GB of free space. One use of this capability would be to let employees load their personalized workspace on another computer. Moreover, this ability should also appeals to businesses where it could be used by administrators to diagnose problematic or malware-infected systems--without having to grapple with Safe Mode.

As observed by The Inquirer, the ability to bring a copy of Windows 8 around does also mean that it could get lost or misplaced. And depending on how the feature is ultimately implemented, system administrators could also be in for headaches should workers attempt to load their own version of Windows on corporate workstations. Of course, with Microsoft not above pulling new features at the last minute, it remains to be seen if Portable Workspace Creator would actually make it to the release of Windows 8.
