The first public beta of the Windows 8 operating system could well be launched as early as two months from now in February 2012. The Next Web reported the time frame, naming sources close to Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT). Based on the various milestones for the release of Windows 7, The Next Web also thinks that the arrival of a beta in February should allow a release to manufacturing in June 2012.

The release date does dovetail with earlier comments made by well-known Microsoft observer Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet. She has written that a beta of Windows 8 would appear after the Consumer Electronics Show that runs from January 10 to 13. The report by The Next Web didn't reveal the features that would make it into the beta version, though I think Microsoft is unlikely to release it without first incorporating UI changes based on feedback on the Developer Preview edition.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is expected to preview its Windows 8 app store today. The new storefront will be built directly into Windows 8 to offer the ability to download free, paid and trial versions of Metro-themed software. Legacy Windows apps, however, will be sold directly by software publishers by means of a landing page to redirect users to off-site web stores and traditional sales outlets.
