Windows 7 to ship on October 22

Many have speculated that the development of Windows 7 is moving along, and that it will be released later this year. Well, Microsoft has finally confirmed that the code for Windows 7 will be finalized for release to manufacturing (RTM) in late July and will be generally available on October 22.

Microsoft will also be offering a Windows Upgrade Option for existing customers, though details about it are not available at this point. Of course, an earlier memo that Microsoft sent to its OEMs did indicate that the eligibility period for this will only start on July 1, and will also not be applicable to every version of Windows Vista. With Windows 7 coming so soon after Windows Vista, the general expectation among experts is that organizations still on Windows XP will likely skip Vista in favor of Windows 7.
