Windows 7 makes it easier to tap into power of GPUs
Beyond the improvements with Solid State Drives, it appears that Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system will also come with significant improvements where graphic performance is concerned. Windows 7 was RTM earlier this week, and will be generally available on October 22.
This will certainly prove a boon to users with heavy graphic requirements like designers and engineers. The heart of Windows 7's enhanced performance appears to be a new API (Application Programming Interface) called DirectX Compute. This API clears the way for programmers to efficiently tap into the parallel processing power found in today's high-end GPUs, or graphic processors.
Nvidia product manager Chris Daniel sums up the enhancements, writing in a blog post that "the first Windows operating system to treat the graphics processing unit (GPU) as a real peer to the CPU."
