WiMax update on track for final approval this year
An update that is set to greatly increase the amount of network traffic supported by WiMax is on track for final approval this year. Called IEEE 802.16m, this second release of WiMax has been under development for five years, and is scheduled to be finalized in March this year. Compatible with the earlier 802.16e, the updated WiMax is expected to be implemented at the end of 2011 or early 2012.
In addition, 802.16m is expected to feature better security and improved user privacy by protecting locations. Network World reports that client devices will also benefit, as the updated standard will help conserve power when in idle or sleep mode.
