WhipTail Technologies now offers 6TB SSD storage appliance

WhipTail Technologies Inc has announced the availability of its 6TB WhipTail SSD appliance. WhipTail is a provider of solid-state drive (SSD) tier 0 storage appliances, and the 6TB represents a capacity increase of its highest-end appliance. Other capacities of 1.5 and 3.0 TB are also available, all of which are manufactured as a 2U appliance.

The use of SSD obviously gives a tremendous boost to performance. According to WhipTail, up to 90 percent energy savings could be expected, while delivery of data is accelerated by a factor of 10.

How WhipTail differs from traditional storage vendors such as EMC and Hitachi, lies in the approach taken. By opting to manage the flash write cycle primarily in software rather than custom flash controllers, WhipTail says that it is able to take advantage of more cost effective hardware.

In an email to FierceCIO:TechWatch, WhipTail CTO James Candelaria said, "What is unique about our product is that we can provide Tier 0 performance at the cost of traditional Tier 1 storage." Tier 0 storage, Candelaria elaborates, is where the "most critical and time sensitive data resides...such as virtualization, enterprise messaging and databases."
