Western Digital announces 1TB VelociRaptor hard-disk drive

Hard-disk maker Western Digital has announced the availability of a new 1TB model in its high-end VelociRaptor hard-disk drive lineup. Spinning at 10,000 RPM, the VelociRaptor range is known to offer consumers and business workstations the fastest performance aside from solid-state drives--but at a more cost-effective price.

Like the previous two generations of VelociRaptor HDDs, the new 1TB model actually comes in a 2.5-inch body, but is mounted into a 3.5-inch frame called the "IcePack" whose sole purpose is to act as a giant heat sink. The 1TB HDD is made up of three 3.33GB platters, has 64 MB of cache memory and incorporates the SATA 3 (6 Gbps) interface to keep data flowing at the maximum possible speed.

Other advanced features found in the VelociRaptor include Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward technology that allows the drive to be used in vibration-prone environments such as in a multi-drive chassis. NoTouch ramp load technology ensures that the recording head never touches the disk media, which equates to less wear and better drive protection when in transit.

A detailed review on StorageReview said the new 1TB VelociRaptor HDD shows substantial performance gains over the previous 600GB model, noting that it is "a very appealing value proposition for those who want a blend of high performance storage, capacity and low cost."

The VelociRaptor family comes with a five-year warranty and is available in capacities of 250GB, 500GB and 1TB for the price of $160, $210 and $320 respectively.
