Web 2.0 a threat to Office?
Microsoft's dominance in the office productivity software market has gone virtually unchallenged since the days when dinosaurs like WordPerfect and ClarisWorks walked the earth. But is Microsoft Office here to stay? Not if Web 2.0 has anything to do with it. While we've already seen some early web-based productivity applications (most notably, Google's Spreadsheets and Writely), a whole industry is set to pop up around the concept of "Office 2.0," with many predicting that web-based applications will bring an end to Microsoft's business model. A number of startup companies will showcase their newest products this week at the Office 2.0 conference in San Francisco. "A lot of people see the Web delivery model and Web 2.0 as a key enabler to end users," said Paul McNamara, CEO of online services start-up Coghead.
