VMware moves to deflect Xen, Microsoft

Officials at VMware, the popular server virtualization package owned by EMC, said they hope to make VMware technology into an industry standard. They plan to work on three parts during the next few months: starting/stopping a server, taking snapshots, and communicating between a server and applications. To help spark that, they are sharing the existing code with Hewlett-Packard and IBM. Microsoft and XenSource are equally well-known in the niche, but they play tiny roles compared to VMware's $91 million in revenue in the last quarter.
