While interest in desktop virtualization is high, VMware's CEO Paul Maritz has admitted what we have known all along: Calculating the cost benefits for it is difficult for most organizations. As a result, broad adoption is likely to happen only in 2010 and 2011.

Highlighting the huge interest on desktop virtualization, Maritz told Network World, "Every meeting I have with a CIO now, desktop virtualization is on the agenda." In addition, Maritz noted that VMware's sales engineers are spending "20 to 30 percent" of their time talking to customers about the desktop virtualization.

However, the issue apparently has to do with companies not knowing the actual cost of provisioning a desktop, which throws a spanner into VMware's ability to develop ROI models for them. As a result, companies that are looking to desktop virtualization as a cost saving measure will probably only implement it after they understand all the issues involved.
