Vista SP1 and Longhorn Server to ship in late 2007

Remember what your teachers used to tell you when you went on field trips: always use the buddy system. The same applies, apparently, to Microsoft products. The company will unleash Vista Service Pack 1 and the long-awaited Longhorn Server at the same time, during the second half of 2007. Two more Longhorn Community Technology Previews (CTP) will be released, one this year and one next, followed by a Beta by mid-2007. "The current plan is to ship Longhorn and Vista SP1 simultaneously, as it is one source code base. So, if you follow that model, you have to ship them both at roughly the same time," said Bob Muglia, Microsoft's senior vice president for server and tools. Muglia also took the opportunity to lay to rest rumors that Longhorn's official name would be Vista Server. "Longhorn is not going to be renamed Vista Server. We will announce the official name when we release Beta 3, which is on track for the first half of 2007." According to eWeek, the company will continue to follow its existing naming scheme and will christen the product "Windows Server 2007".
