VESA finalizes Displayport v1.2 standard

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has signed-off on Displayport v1.2, which effectively doubles the data rate from the earlier v1.1a standard. Now running at a blistering 21.6Gbps, the new standard will also be able to transport USB at a more than adequate 720Mbps--faster than USB 2.0, but slower than the upcoming USB 3.0.

The increased data bandwidth means that it will be possible to simultaneously drive four monitors at up to 1920 x 1200 resolution, and should be more than adequate for next-generation 3D displays. In addition, the new standard is also fully backward compatible where connectors and cables are concerned. Of course, actual speeds here are dependent on the lowest common denominator, much like most bus standards around.
