It's no secret that we here at DailyTechRag are big fans of the Ubuntu OS. And like 230 million or so other Americans, we use mobile phones. So naturally, we're quite happy to hear that Canonical plans to "extend its open-source software development to handheld Internet-enabled devices." More specifically, the company has partnered with Intel to produce a mobile variant of the Linux operating system for smartphones and other handhelds. Even better, Canonical is keeping it real by releasing both early and often: Ubuntu Mobile will be released alongside Ubuntu 7.10 for the desktop in October. Ubuntu is getting a lot of love from the press lately, not to mention major players like Intel and Dell. Deservedly so: the OS is one of the most stable, intuitive and user-friendly Linux distributions available. If the goodwill continues to snowball, Ubuntu could eventually become a viable threat to Windows on all platforms.
