The top picks of CES 2009

Dean Takahashi of VentureBeat walked the halls of CES 2009 and came back with a list of his top 10 favorite gadgets/technologies. While I am highly skeptical of his claims that he "saw every one of" the 20,000 products showcased there--this would involve looking at almost 10 items per minute for every single hour that CES is open--I thought it would be fun to pick my favorites from it.

  • Palm Pre: Based on the feedback of those who saw a live demonstration of the new Palm Pre. Palm looks set to be three times as lucky after all. I will talk more about this more over at FierceMobileIT tomorrow.
  • Yahoo Widget Engine: Developed together with Intel, the Yahoo Widget Engine has a development kit that allows just the creation of widgets that will scroll along the bottom of the TV screen at the click of a button. Already, four major TV makers showed off connected TVs with the technology.
  • Casio EX-FS10 Digital Camera: This digital camera takes up to 30 pictures per second in a bid to find that perfect shot. According to VentureBeat, Casio is close to being able to mass market this technology. On the other hand, I have headache enough trying to select the "best" photos from those few that I take for my reviews--I'm not sure I can handle another few dozen.
  • Shapeways 3-D prototyping: Using sophisticated design and fabrication tools, objects can be created literally on the fly via 3-D prototyping. You can design your own object, which can be created and shipped to you.
  • Mattel's Mindflex game: Literally a mind game here. A headset measures brain wave, which is used to navigate a floating ball through hoops and cages. Will be fun to have this technology mature enough to appear on more devices.
