Teleworking initiative saves more than $100k
On August 3, a joint project between the Telework Exchange, Telework!VA and Virginia government officials saw workers encouraged to work from home on a designated "Telework Day." According to the follow-up report by Telework Exchange, more than 4,267 employees participated in the telework initiative, with the majority based in Virginia.
The benefits tallied up, to the tune of 155,782 miles--or a reduction of about 82 tons of pollutants by not having to drive. This resulted in a monetary savings of $124,000, or potentially up to $2,000 per teleworker over the course of one year. While hardly a fortune, it is certainly not an amount to be scoffed at either.
Of course, I would be more skeptical of the 69% who reported that they accomplished "more than what they typically do in the office" when teleworking. This sounds too much like a biased question designed to skew the report toward a positive note. Still, it is undeniable that teleworking does save money and deliver environmental benefits.
