Technological trends in 2010

Nancy Weil of Computerworld came up with a list of 10 IT predictions for 2010. The predictions are rather bold and specific, which you can access via the link below. After reading through the predictions, I was inspired to come up with a couple of my own technological trends that I believe will happen next year.

Mobile war leads to a battle of platforms

Consumers today are comparing their smartphone purchases based on the various system specifications and appearance of the devices. Expect the battleground to shift however, as phone makers release newer iterations of popular devices such as the Apple iPhone, Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, RIM BlackBerry and others. Instead of specific hardware devices, user allegiance will shift towards the underlying platforms that power these devices; it will become more difficult to get users to switch platforms.

SSDs go mainstream

Having the chance to use a Samsung Solid State Drive (SSD) as part of a review, there is no way I am going back to using a laptop that works on a traditional HDD. Assuming one invests in a mid-range, or better SSD, the performance improvement can probably be described as shocking.  With storage giant Seagate unveiling their first SSD lineup, one can expect 2010 to be a year where SSDs start to be favored over traditional hard disk drives.
