Switch to Windows 7 64-bit is not smooth sailing for everyone
eWeek's Andrew Garcia eagerly installed Window 7 when the RTM became available, but was left frustrated with a number of incompatibilities in the 64-bit edition. He recounted how he was unable to get his Matrox TripleHead2Go to perform the same magic. To be fair though, the chipset in his laptop wasn't officially supported.
On the other hand, Garcia encountered a problem which I am personally familiar with: His VPN client did not work in the 64-bit environment. In the end, he settled for running a virtualized desktop environment to run the VPN software--I had opted to revert back to Windows Vista instead.
While I really like Windows 7, Garcia's experience is just one example of how driver and software compatibility remain an important consideration for enterprises considering Windows 7; companies need to do a proper evaluation before making the switch.
With PCs and laptops with more than 4GB of RAM increasingly common, this also means ensuring that software can run in a 64-bit environment too.
