Survey: Low usage of Microsoft encryption
A new survey has shed new light on the adoption rate for Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) BitLocker full-disk encryption technology, which is included in the Enterprise and Ultimate versions of the company's Windows Vista and Windows 7 operating system. On the server end, BitLocker is also implemented in Windows Server 2008 and newer.
According to security vendor Opswat however, few organizations are actually using it, even if the encryption technology was available. The data was obtained by some 35,000 reports obtained via its OESIS software framework deployed on network endpoints. Opswat says only 10 percent of these computers have some form of hard-disk encryption software installed; slightly more than 8 percent have BitLocker installed, while some other encryption product is found in the remaining 2 percent of workstations.
More pertinently though, is the revelation that encryption is actively used in only 1.47 percent of computers with BitLocker installed. That's approximately 42 computers actually using BitLocker out of 35,000 PCs, a dismal figure regardless of how you look at it.
