Sun pushes eco-friendly tech with SWaP metric
Last month, Sun Microsystems announced its new metric for assessing IT environmental factors. They call it SWaP, standing for "Space, wattage and performance." The idea is to help everyone from accountants to CIOs to the IT rank-and-file determine the real-world cost of adding, removing or reconfiguring data center gear. Industry analysts have mixed reactions, with some saying it's a step forward and others asserting it's got too many variables to be truly helpful.
