Sun launches portal for open Java progress
Sun Microsystems is becoming more forthright in their open-sourcing of Java. They built a new portal site containing forums, news, blogs and strategy documentation. Explained the Sun official in charge of opening Java: "I know many of you want to know more and want us to go faster. But the truth is that it's not ambiguity, it's due care and attention and respect for the existing community working on Sun's code... Expect a steady stream of news from now on, as well as an honest desire for dialogue with everyone". That sounds fairly believable, but there's still another obstacle that Sun must overcome: they don't yet own the rights to all of the code that's being open-sourced. So the new portal might also serve as something of a stall tactic, placing lawyers ahead of engineers.
