Sun Microsystems loves the open-source community and they want the world to know. At the FOSS.IN open-source software summit in Bangalore last week, Sun chief open-source officer Simon Phipps announced the Open Source Community Innovation Awards Program--an awards program that will have Sun donating $1 million to independent software developers who contribute code to Sun's open-source projects. While some have compared this new program to Google's Summer of Code, there are a few differences: Sun's award is open to anyone, not just students, Sun will allow award recipients to divide the award among their team as they see fit and Sun's program seems more geared toward awarding developers who contribute to Sun's products. Who wants to be a millionaire?
