A high school student in the state of New York has been slapped with three felony charges after accessing personnel records on a poorly configured computer without authorization. He was caught after he decided to notify his principal of the security weakness in an email. The email was traced with the help of the district's IT department, resulting in the student being suspended and ordered to face the charges in Saratoga County. The "hacking" by an unnamed, 15-year-old student involved using a generic school district password to gain access to a file containing personal information on 250 workers. Hackers have criticized the school for making the student a scapegoat for its own shoddy security problems.
