Using a 'sleep proxy' to lower PC energy use at Microsoft Research
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) will be presenting a paper at a technical conference later this month on its use of a sleep proxy system to lower energy costs. The culprit: PCs left on overnight for remote access or administrative tasks. A sleep proxy setup consists of two components, client software and a server portion that is notified whenever the client is powered off. The server basically ensures that all incoming traffic meant for the client goes to it instead. Depending on the kind of traffic, the server might ignore it, respond on behalf of the client, or awaken the client workstation. Article
