Riverbed unveils virtual WAN optimization appliances

Riverbed Technology this week unveiled new versions of its Steelhead WAN optimization appliance in virtual machine formats. WAN optimization works by utilizing multiple techniques, such as deduplication and optimizing network transmissions to send data using 60 to 95 percent less bandwidth. Riverbed says that its new appliances are specifically being developed for deployment on VMware, with proper configuration required in order to ensure performance. They will be a boon in areas where it isn't possible to deploy physical boxes. Riverbed says the new appliances will enter general availability in the third quarter this year. Article
