The Data Protection Authority in Hamburg, Germany has threatened to fine Facebook over its facial recognition technology. Facebook responded by telling The Register that it rejects "any claim that we are not meeting our obligations under European Union data protection law." The facial-recognition feature is activated by default unless users change their settings to opt out. Facebook did make an announcement when the feature debuted in the United States, but not when it arrived in Europe. The United Kingdom's Information Commissioner is investigating as well. Article
