Building a 100,000-port Ethernet switch

In a bid to accommodate the largest data centers, researchers from the University of California at San Diego say that software they created will allow Layer 2 network fabrics to scale beyond 100,000 ports. The new software, called PortLand, is designed to work with existing hardware and routing protocols.
