SPOTLIGHT: AMD tinkering with open-source chip sockets

Advanced Micro Devices wants to open-source its chip socket specifications so that other companies can build Opteron co-processors. AMD's calling this the Torrenza Initiative. ATI, which AMD recently acquired, will make use of the socket first. But other companies like Cray, Fujitsu-Siemens, IBM and Sun are all considering it as well. Article
