Sony to sell Cell CPU to Toshiba?
If recent rumors are to be believed, Sony is having a bit of a rummage sale lately. First, it looked like the company was shopping around its robotics division and now, it looks like the company's Cell processor fabrication plants might be up for sale. In case you've forgotten, the Cell is the modular CPU that Sony uses in its Playstation 3 console--a processor that the company hopes will have some crossover appeal in the data center. According to the rumor, the plants have a $860 million price tag attached and Toshiba is named as a potential buyer. Sony has struggled to find a market for the expensive video game console that uses the chips and it probably makes sense for the consumer electronics company to sell off its chip fabrication division: in the post-65nm world, the manufacturing of microprocessors is probably best left to the big boys.
