Sony promises Intel VT support in "selected" future models

Sony has finally relented and said that it will enable Intel's Virtual Technology (VT) on future--selected--Sony Vaio laptop models. VT is a standard feature in all Intel Core 2 Duo processors, and is required by the upcoming Windows 7 operating system to support its Windows XP Mode for virtualization. Unfortunately, Sony decided earlier on to disable VT in the BIOS for its entire line of laptops that use the Intel Core 2 Duo mobile processor.

Existing owners of Sony's Vaio laptop or PC brands will not be happy though, since they are now officially left high and dry. This includes yours truly. I am currently using a Sony Z laptop as my work machine, and have been eagerly looking forward to using it with Windows 7 and a fast SSD.

Explaining the situation, senior manager for product marketing Xavier Lauwaert blogged last week that Sony is "very concerned that enabling VT would expose our systems to malicious code..." and as such have not opted to enable VT due to "very little if any requests until recently."

Seriously, I think that Sony needs to get its act together. Why is it that no other computer makers have similar concerns about "VT security," and are all perfectly happy to provide access to the built-in VT features? After this debacle, I will hesitate in getting any PCs from Sony in future.
