Sony announces XQD Memory Card

Sony (NYSE: SNE) has announced its first XQD memory cards, which will become available for sale in February. This comes barely a month after the CompactFlash Association announced that the XQD memory card format will be the official replacement for the aging CompactFlash standard.

Sony says the new H-series family of XQD memory cards supports data transfers of up to 125Mbps for read and write operations, allowing up to 100 frames in RAW format in continuous shooting mode when used with a compatible camera. Moreover, reliable data recording is ensured using wear leveling technology in order to equalize rewrite frequency on the card.

Also due to be launched at the same time is a Sony USB 2.0/3.0 compatible XQD card reader, while an XQD ExpressCard Adapter will also be available for laptop computers equipped with an ExpressCard 34 slot. According to PCWorld, the 16GB and 32GB versions of Sony's H-series XQD memory card is expected to go on sale Feb. 15, and will be sold at an estimated list price starting at $260.

In an email message, Sony also said that it plans to enhance its XQD memory card offering in the future. For now, more information about the new Sony XQD Memory Card can be found on Sony's website here.
