Solid State Drives add real value to businesses

A quiet revolution is happening in the use of Solid State Drives (SSD) by businesses, it appears. The New York Times reported on how Wine.com managed to drastically speed up the posting of invoices from 100 invoices per four minutes to just 10 seconds after switching to using SSDs from Fusion-io.

The above example is just one compelling case study on how the staggering performance advantage of SSDs can yield such a tangible benefit in business. Overall, a staggering 400 percent improvement in speed was achieved, according to Geoffrey Smalling, the CTO at Wine.com.

Ultimately, the sheer performance advantage of SSDs is the primary reason I noted last week about the certainty that rotational hard disk drives of today will eventually be eclipsed by SSDs.

According to Gregory Wong, an analyst at Forward Insights, price needs to approach $1 per gigabyte of storage before mass adoption of SSDs will take place. In the meantime though, businesses will do well to consider whether an upgrade to SSDs can be used to improve performance, rather than simply buying a new server
