SharePoint bug in service pack update switches product to trial mode
Microsoft has warned of a significant bug in the Service Pack 2 (SP2) update to its Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 portal product. When applied, SP2 resets the activation of MOSS 2007, causing licensed installations of MOSS 2007 to think that it is a trial installation. And that's not all; other products such as Project Server 2007, Form Server 2007, Search Server 2008 and Search Server 2008 Express are also affected, according to Microsoft.
Data is not affected, though the software will stop working after 180 days if nothing is done. Microsoft is currently working on a hotfix to resolve the issue to remedy the SP2 problem. IT administrators of affected organizations will probably want to keep a close eye on the Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog in the meantime.
