XenSource, an open-source virtualization contender, will include Microsoft's Virtual Hard Disk format in its XenEnterprise 3.0 server. No, that's not an April Fool's Day joke (see our "And Finally..." section for that). From Microsoft's perspective, it's better that companies run Windows virtually alongside *nix-based operating systems than not at all. Meanwhile, Xen's rival VMWare is making its own format available cost-free.
