Security companies: Conficker worm fears exaggerated
In an unusual move, security vendors have come forward to offer assurances to users or administrators worried about the Conficker worm head of April 1. This is the date which the Conficker is scheduled to obtain a code update which could make it more dangerous. Already, experts who have studied the worm are saying that tomorrow, Conficker will switch to scanning 500 domains per day instead of the original 250 domains.
However, Mikko Hypponen, F-Secure's chief research officer thinks that nothing bad will happen on April 1 as a result of the worm. The reason is because most infected machines at the moment have a variant that won't get updated in April. In the same vein, the director of PandaLabs, Luis Corrons, has urged people "not to get taken in by the panic." The reason has to do with infection levels being reduced to low levels in the past few weeks.
