Seagate ships new 600GB enterprise 2.5-inch HDD
Seagate, the world's largest producer of hard disk drive (HDD) in terms of volume has just shipped a new 600GB enterprise drive that runs at 10,000 rpm. Designed for storage arrays, the Savvio 10K.4 comes in a 2.5-inch form factor sporting either a 4Gbps Fibre Channel or 6Gbps SAS interface.
Due to improvements in HDD architecture, the Savvio 10K.4 is rated with an MTBF of 2 million hours, which is a substantial improvement over the normal 500,000 to 1 million hours of standard drives. Another benefit of the small drive is that they consume less power--and that translates to less cooling as a result. According to Seagate, an SED (self-encrypting drive) option is available for OEMs where hardware encryption of data is desired.
Pricing and general availability details are not available at this moment, though Seagate says the drive is currently shipping.
