Seagate ships 3TB Barracuda XT HDD for desktops
Hard disk manufacturer Seagate has introduced a new 3TB hard disk drive for desktops that can be deployed on legacy systems or for users still using Windows XP. The 7,200Rrpm Barracuda XT is no slouch, packing a 64MB cache and 6.0Gbps Serial ATA interface. The highlight though, is the inclusion of Seagate's DiscWizard software and corresponding drive support that showcases the Barracuda XT's full capacity for use, even on PC systems that uses older BIOS.
The DiscWizard software lets the operating system recognize the remaining storage space after installation. This space is allocated to the second partition, which is assigned under a new drive letter within Windows. Newer systems are expected to come with Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) in the future, which will natively support hard drives that are larger than 2.1TB. Seagate says the Barracuda XT is expected to be available in a couple of weeks for a manufacturer suggested retail price of $279.
