Samsung unveils long-awaited Galaxy Tab Internet tablet

Samsung finally pulled the veil off its Galaxy Tab on Thursday. As expected, the Samsung Internet tablet will have a 7-inch display, and pack a resolution of 1024x600 pixels. It also has both a front facing camera as well as a back-mounted one, for video chats and photo taking respectively. Running Android 2.2 (Froyo), Samsung says that the Galaxy Tab will also be upgradeable to Android 3.0 when it is released.

With a battery life of between seven to 10 hours, the Galaxy Tab weights just 0.8 pounds, or 380 grams for the 3G-enabled tablet. In comparison, the iPad weights between 1.5 pounds to 1.6 pounds, depending on the model. Of course, the lighter weight here is probably due to its smaller form factor.

The head of Samsung Mobile's product planning team, W.P. Wong, reaffirmed the company's belief that it has a better product. Wong said, "Honestly, I don't see anything [about the Galaxy Tab] that is weaker than the iPad."

Samsung has an advantage on a few fronts, one of which is that it has abundant experience with consumer electronics, which range from smartphones to printers and televisions, among others. In addition, Samsung is uniquely positioned in that the company makes the memory, display and processor used in the Galaxy.

The Tab will begin shipping in Europe first, either in late September or early October. It will arrive in the U.S. by the end of the year though. It will be available at a "range of prices" due to Samsung's intention to sell the device through telephone operators.
