Samsung releases 1GHz processor
Samsung has co-developed a new processor with Texas-based Intensity that it says runs at 1GHz. Designed for smartphones, the new chip is code-named "Hummingbird." Of course, it's hardly the first processor to hit 1GHz in speed--Qualcomm already makes a 1GHz ARM chip; Texas Instrument has also indicated that future OMAP processors will hit gigahertz speeds too.
The nature of smartphones' demands is that they need to have better power efficiencies than even laptops. Yet the increasing number of applications for these ubiquitous devices means that performance is also becoming important as users expect to run an increasing number of demanding software on them. As such, you can expect to see even more chip makers push the 1GHz envelop for smartphones over the next year or so.
