Samsung readies hybrid drive with flash memory

Hard drives that use memory aren't new, but Samsung has a new approach with its prototype drive designed for laptop computers. The drive is meant to save battery life by using flash memory in the same way as a RAM cache--it minimizes the need for programs to conduct electrically demanding read/write operations to the standard hard drive. Samsung plans to ship the as-yet unnamed drives early in 2007, officials said. Expect to see similar drives from other companies.
