Samsung overtakes Motorola as #2 mobile vendor
Despite a long tradition of iconic phones--the StarTac, the Razr--Motorola has finally succumbed to rival manufacturer Samsung. After four years in the #2 position, Motorola's worldwide marketshare in Q2 2007 slipped to 13 percent, allowing Samsung to sneak ahead with 13.7 percent of the market. Unsurprisingly, Nokia maintained its stranglehold on the market with 37 percent worldwide marketshare; rounding out the top five are Sony Ericsson (9.1 percent) and LG (7 percent). Worldwide shipments of mobile phones increased as well during the second quarter, with 272.7 total devices shipped.
